Home Insurance
Home or Condo Insurance ?? Who Needs It??
YOU
DO, IF...
1. You own your own home
or condo
and
2. You have a MORTGAGE on your home / condo
and
3. You have ASSETS to protect
WHY HAVE A HOME INSURANCE POLICY?
PROTECTION! PROTECTION! PROTECTION!
Did You Know...
1. Owning a home insurance policy protects not only your house but also...
- a. Other Structures (like a shed or a detached garage you have on your property)
- b. Your personal belongings; clothes, furniture,
appliances, toys, cookware, pictures, etc., etc., etc...
- c. Loss of Use - If something happens to your house (a bad
storm causes enough damage that you have to live elsewhere), the
policy will pay the rent on ANOTHER house until you can move back
into your home.
2. Owning a home insurance policy protects your assets - current and future.
- The liability part of the policy protects you if someone is on
your property and is injured due to some problem that you haven't
taken care of such as icy sidewalks in the winter.
- It also
protects you, if you accidentally injure someone
of damage their property while participating in some activity such
as hitting someone with a golf ball while playing golf or causing
smoke damage in a hotel room you're occupying.
- The insurance policy pays medical bills, pays for time lost at
work and pays to repair damage you may have caused. The
liability part of the policy protects you if the injured party
decides to sue you! The policy even pays for your lawyer!!
3. What can happen that will be covered by your home insurance policy?
- Lots of things...such as fire, windstorm, hail, lightning,
explosion, a vehicle hitting your house, pipes freezing and
bursting, vandalism, burglary or robbery, and much more. A
deductible will be applied to any property damage loss that occurs.
4. What is different about a condo owner's policy and what
will be covered by your condo insurance policy?
- A condo policy is different in that it usually DOESN'T cover a
house. The condo building is normally covered by a master
policy carried by the condominium association. Instead, the
individual owner’s policy covers additional or upgraded items the
owner of the condominium adds to the building.
For instance, it could be something simple like an upgraded lighting
fixture or something more elaborate like a fully customized bathroom
with upgraded fixtures throughout. In neither case, will the condo
owner remove these items should they decide to move so these items
are now a permanent part of the condominium but the owner who
installed them needs to provide coverage for them on their condo
policy. Whatever the changes, the policy refers to them as either
“Improvements and Betterments” or “Additions and Alterations” and
they are covered with the same type of coverage as the building on
the homeowner policy is covered.
The policy includes coverage for Other Structures, Personal
Belongings (Contents) and Loss of Use, just like the home owner
insurance policy.
5. What can happen that WON'T be covered by your home insurance policy?
Your home policy has a list of things that are EXCLUDED from
coverage and some of them you can actually buy special coverage for.
a few things
not
covered that can be covered separately: flood,
earthquake, losing a piece of jewelry...
A few things not covered that you won't be able to insure
separately: wear and tear to the property, damage you cause
intentionally, damage caused when the house is left vacant for an
extended period of time...
